Personality tests are tools that are used to assess a person’s specific traits and behaviours.
They are used for a variety of purposes, such as assessing employee potential, helping with career decisions and gaining a deeper understanding of a person’s personality and behaviour.
There are many different types of personality tests and the most commonly used are listed below.
The Big Five personality test
This well-known test was developed in the 1970s and assesses five personality dimensions: conscientiousness, extraversion, emotional stability, openness to experience and agreeableness. Each person receives scores for each dimension, and these are used to determine a person’s overall personality. The FFM test is used in areas such as recruitment, counselling and social research.

Myer-Briggs Personality Test (MBTI)
This personality test is probably the best known and most widely used of all. It is based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types and measures four dimensions of personality: extroversion vs. introversion, sensing vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, and judgment vs. perception. Each person can be placed into one of 16 different categories based on these dimensions. MBTI is frequently used in business to help understand how people approach problems and decision-making.
Neopi Personality Test
This test was developed in the 1950s by psychologist David Wechsler and assesses four personality dimensions: emotionality, conscientiousness, extroversion and emotional stability. Each person receives scores for each dimension, and these are used to determine a person’s overall personality. The Neopi test is widely used in fields such as human resources and counselling.
Holland Personality Test
This test is based on John Holland’s personality theory and measures six personality types: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional. It is used in career counselling and staff assessment and helps to identify a person’s fit with a particular career or field of work.

DISC Personality Test
This test is based on William Marston’s personality theory and measures four personality dimensions: dominance, influence, stability and conformity. It is used in personnel assessment and career counselling.
16PF personality test or Cattell test (16 Personality Factor)
This is another widely used personality test. This test assesses 16 personality dimensions, including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience. 16PF is a scientifically validated test and is used in a variety of fields, including clinical psychology, coaching and human resources.

Personality tests have long been used to help assess and understand human personality. One of the oldest personality tests is the Hippocrates Personality Test, which was developed around 400 BC by the Greek physician Hippocrates.
This test was based on the idea that there were four essential body humours – blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm – that influenced personality and health. People were classified into four personality types, depending on which of these humours was dominant in their body.
This test has largely been abandoned in favour of more modern approaches to personality assessment, but is still mentioned as an interesting example of the history of personality testing.
